Welcome to the website for the Kent villages of Brenchley and Matfield, and the hamlets of Castle Hill and Petteridge. Our aim is to provide information on events, Parish Council matters, community organisations, businesses, services and places of interest within easy reach. We hope that it will be a useful site for both local residents and visitors to the area. The Parish Council and both villages also have their own Facebook pages. To visit these, click on the links at the bottom of any page on this website.
The two villages make up the Parish of Brenchley and Matfield which lies some six miles to the east of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Surrounded by orchards and farmland, the villages lie in the heart of the Weald of Kent and in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Brenchley Village
Brenchley is the older village with a church (All Saints) which dates back to the 13th century and has an avenue of 400 year-old yew trees. The Kentish rebel leader Wat Tyler is said to have lived in a cottage near Brenchley before he led the peasants’ revolt in 1381. The main village street still contains a number of attractive old timbered houses.
Matfield Village
Matfield grew up later, around its Village Green (the largest in Kent) and pond. Many of the houses surrounding the Green date back to the 18th century and several have the typical Kentish construction of timber frames with white weatherboarding. The First World War Poet, Siegfried Sassoon, was born in the village.
